You Left Egypt – Now Pay It Forward

Abstract

How has the Exodus story impacted the moral life of Jews throughout the generations? In this lesson, learners will study several selections from the writings of contemporary Jewish thinkers and discuss the  impact the Exodus story has made on the national consciousness of the Jewish people, as well as upon legislated Jewish law. Thought provoking  discussion triggers about the relevance of the “Exodus morality” to our own lives, and creative learning activities such as an opportunity to create a social action project that shows concern for the vulnerable in their local community, are featured in this resource.

The learners will:

  1. understand the ways in which the the Exodus impacts our ethical mandates to this day

  2. know a variety of contemporary Jewish perspectives on what Jewish morality looks like as a result of the national experience in Egypt

  3. be able to be able to apply the key ethical messages of the Exodus to a practical social action project which will positively impact the weak and vulnerable in their community
