The Torah is Better than Any Merchandise: The Importance of the Torah for Us

“The Torah is a hidden treasure that was concealed by You before the creation of the world, and You seek to give it to flesh and blood?” In this aggada, (Shabbat 88b), the angels express shock that God was giving away His treasure to Moshe and the Jewish people. What makes the Torah precious? What leads us to consider something a treasure? In this resource, learners will read a charming story showing how there is more to determining what is of value than meets the eye, followed by a discussion relating the story to the ways in which Torah study is valuable to us in our own lives. Creating a Torah “treasure chest” with students’ input as to what should be included, is a creative learning activity that rounds out the lesson. The resource includes a template (see attachment below) that provides a space for students to explain why they choose their “Torah Treasure”.

The learner will:

  1. Understand why it is beneficial to study Torah

  2. know the storyline of The Torah is Better than Any Merchandise and the lesson that the story teaches

  3. be able to choose and share their submissions to to the Torah treasure box
