The Amidah – Part Two

Abstract

How does the Amidah enable us to express ourselves as individuals and as members of the Jewish community ? In this lesson, learners will explore this question by focusing on three of the blessings found in the Amidah that illustrate the broad scope of individual and national concerns that the prayer addresses.  Beginning with a jigsaw activity, students will divide into three groups, with each group assigned one of the three blessings (accompanied by guiding questions) to study and discuss. Several suggested activities that help to concretize the significance of these Amidah blessings, such as designing a sign that designates the direction (north, west, east ,south) of Jerusalem for hanging in the classroom, and creating a list of names of people in need of healing are featured in this resource.

The learner will:

  1. understand how these blessings reflect core Jewish values 

  2. know several of the individual blessings of the Amidah

  3. be able to explain what about these three blessings in the Amidah is meaningful to them
