Abstract

Gender equality and gender roles are some of the most debated issues in our contemporary society.  What does the Torah and Jewish thought have to say about these topics?  Genesis 1 and 2 present us with two very different accounts of the creation of man and woman.  In this lesson, learners will study the Biblical texts as well as a variety of Rabbinic commentaries, which act as a springboard for student discussion of gender-related issues that are at the forefront of contemporary society. A variety of thought provoking prompts suitable for a class debate are featured in this resource.

The learner will:

  1. Understand how the Biblical perspective on gender equality is nuanced

  2. Know that the Bible presents two different accounts of the creation of man and woman and know some Rabbinic commentaries on these Torah verses.

  3. Be able to apply the provided texts to their personal views on contemporary gender issues and explain how or if these sources impact their perspectives
